The Truth about Bread: Should I or Shouldn’t I?


In the last decade-plus, we’ve been inundated with crash diet after health craze, each promising a different miracle than the last. The Mediterranean diet, vegan, paleo, keto, intermittent fasting...which one is superior? The truth, as always, probably falls somewhere in-between each of these plans, or perhaps some blend of all of them. To their credit, each likely offers a certain health benefit that’s hard to find elsewhere. Whether you adhere to any of these diets or none of them, it’s likely that you’ve been taught to restrict or even eliminate bread from your diet in the past...the dreaded other B-word.


The problem with that recommendation is that it lumps together all breads in the same proverbial basket. We also tend to try to eliminate “guilt” foods, but creating emotional negativity around any food is not the best foot to start off on if we’re talking about creating good habits. Although the research is always changing (hence the “diet of the year” trends), by now, anyone who is wellness-conscious knows that heavily processed foods are not encouraged when it comes to getting your body to function optimally and reduce inflammation. 


But contrary to what many food fads may have you thinking, incorporating some “good” carbs into your lifestyle is a plus. Eliminating them entirely? Not so much. Think your brain (and stomach) can’t distinguish between a bread that’s been made from bleached wheat flour and heavily processed versus one that’s made from flaxseeds and sprouted whole grains? Think again!
